| Question: How did you get started? | ||
|
In 1992 we took a dog sled ride. Harry had just gotten notice of his downsizing
and we were looking for something he could do. After the ride we came home and
decided we could build a small team and give rides. We worked for a year to save
the money to buy a five-dog team.Little did we know how grueling this
work would be. Snow where we lived was very inconsistent. But...we did give a
ride to a fourth grade teacher at Lela's school. Her 4th grade class happened to
be reading the book Stone Fox, by John Reynolds Gardiner and she invited
Harry to bring the team and equipment to her class. The classroom visit was a
success and that night over dinner, we decided that a successful business could
be built around our dogs and their history. Harry is not one to take "No," for
an answer and he enjoyed the challenge of marketing this business that we knew
would be a stellar way of encouraging kids to read about sled dogs or anything
else they might love. Mountain Mushers was born.
Harry and the dogs traveled to schools, libraries and events all over
southern California until 2004. Lela would go along when she was off-track from
school. In 2004, with Su and Zack (our last original team dog,)we "retired" to
Montana. After a year off and Zack's passing, we applied to Denali National Park
to adopt a retiring sled dog. We got TWO...Pixie and Sorrel. Along with Su they
became our "new" second team. We were just doing local events but before long,
word got out that we would travel around Montana, and then some nation-wide
publicity created requests for us to travel around the country. We are honored
to share these incredible heroes with every audience.
